I have to start by just putting this out there that i'm down for any movie that has Morgan Freeman, and Freeman voice over! so very good. the reallity in ths movie about just taking the rough as it comes and just being a convicted man thats turning into a completely unselfsustainable institutionalized man is great in the theme. And i think that this is portrayed very well in the two different mentality of the characters Andy, and Red. One a man, creative, well read, and intelegent man who is as innocent as the day he is born and Red a worn man who knows how to get a few things here and there. the two caharacters freindship comploment each others development beautifuly. the smaller roles where also amazing. For example, Captain Hedley, or the name i perfer to call him THE KURGEN, and not to forget the first casualty of the institutionalization of a man in prison for most of his life, poor Ole' Brooks whose character showed the psychological institutionalized future of morgan freemans character Red. But aside from that, i loved the camera fedelity of this film, the lathargic, discusting, grey scenery of the prison of shawshank made the motion of time and emotion of the film very effective for the characters, and character of the prison itself.
